“Christ’s Descent into Hell”
Oil on wood, created in the 16th century, probably around 1550–1560
The early church called Holy Saturday “The Great Sabbath.” For many Christian traditions, the Great Sabbath was the only day of the year when Christians fasted. The fasting was meant to align a Christian’s will with the will of God in preparation for Resurrection Sunday. Holy Saturday also raises the question, “Where did the soul of Jesus go while Jesus’ body lay in the grave?” The question is debated, and if you want one possible answer, you are welcome to listen to the sermon entitled, “The Descent and Ascent of Christ.”
